The most likely explanation here is that your CP790 was inadvertantly 
configured to use the standard 'usb' CUPS backend, rather than the 
custom 'gutenprint53+usb' backend.

The CP790 is a special case; from a driver perspective it's a sibling of 
the ES40 rather than the more typical CP-series model.  However, I don't 
have access to either the CP790 or ES40, so it's certianly possible a 
regression has slipped in since these were last tested several years 
ago.

If you could confirm the backend that's being used (visible in the 
connection URI) that would tell us what the next steps need to be.
