Thanks again for the input.

I am using X4, and haven't had any problems with KDE yet.

If I were to guess, I would have thought it would have been a cookie... but 
that is supposed to be stored in .xauthority... and I have definitely wiped 
them out.  I wiped everything out that the user owned on the system... no 
dice.  Whatever it is keeping "track" of that uid is not owned by the user.

When I googled, all I could see that was similar were issues with people who 
did no properly use their xhost -- but xhost works on a per machine basis.... 
not per user.

Nothing different about those users.  They worked one day, and not the next...

Somewhere on the system that uid is "blacklisted"... I just don't know where X 
keeps track of that stuff if it is not in Xauthority...  The other 
possibility is a pam issue.... but I don't think it is as likely... and I 
still don't have a clue on how to procede even if it was...
