Done all that, I get lots more output, and the last lines are

+ [ -n ]
+ [ 8139too = Autodetected ]
+ echo alias eth0 8139too # selected
+ [ -n ]
+ /sbin/ifconfig eth0
8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.26

and there it stops.

The machine is too old to boot from CDROM, so I'm currently trying to boot
from a floppy with the kernel on it.  Its having problems locating a root
device though.

My final plan was to boot debian woody from floppy.  When I do this, the
machine dies with a similar message,

8139cp: not a supported chip, try 8139too
8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.24

ad then it dies.

I've tried debian without that NIC and it boots fine, so I'm sure it's a
NIC/board conflict.  Bugger.
