I talked to a specialist yesterday - as it seems, there is no common
standard for a task like that. Wyse Rapport and HP Altiris seem to be
quite popular. People want to be able to keep their asset data up to
date, e.g.  hostnames (easy), IP parameters and MAC address (easy), serial
numbers (harder but may be gotten with dmidecode "System Information"),
type and model (ditto), location (impossible to get from the client),
hardware config (screen res etc.)

Maybe net-snmp does it all, already? HOST-RESOURCES-MIB.txt seems to
provide what people expect. E.g. on my SUSE 9.2 system, a simple 

snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 localhost

with stock snmpd config, I get all the data (6378 lines :-)). So I would
suggest to add net-snmp, i.e. only the daemon and the MIBs. We may not need
all MIBs, maybe only system, host and if. snmpd.conf(5) can give you an
idea about what we can preconfigure. sysLocation.0 may be hard to provide
in an PXES image used on 500 clients but hey.
