Well, the changes began just after the release  of 4.0. Even if It may not seem so, but sometimes is because of more impelling duties, I'm constantly looking after RTAI and when you see nothing going on there may be an intense testing activity of new feature.
It is what happening now for the final release of 5.0. Before it I would like to fix the self calibration glitches and the non return of make hard real time. Unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce the problems and trying to understand them without  seeing them is a bit difficult.

Alright, what threw me off was that since May, there weren't really any development in RTAI itself in magma, and I saw a lot of changes in the announcement.

An excerpt of what's new:
- updates and a few bug fixes
- no more legacy modes, use only the patches found in 5.0 (or the "x" ones in magma)
- some significant code cleaning, i386-x86_64 substantially unified
- RTAI hardened kthreads can now be used with the "style" of user space threads/processes; beware of  large data on the stack, though
- no more periodic mode for the hard timer, anyway you call start_rt_timer it will default to start_rt_timer(0)
- support up to Linux-3.18.22
- added support for MUSL libc-libm.a in kernel space
- arch support of just what is being actively maintained, i.e.: i386, x86_64, ARM boards; anybody wanting to help in resurrecting PowerPc and m68k is welcome
