I'm not using any more the RTAI patch, because, for my needs, the kernel
RT_PREEMPT <https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO>
patch provides the required performance, and makes my life much easier,
also because some distro's such as Ubuntu, Redhat/CentOs and others do
provide as an alternative to standard kernel, also an RT_PREEMPT patched
one, which takes into account all what's required by the specific
distribution details.
Therefore I can't help you too much on picking up the best source.
However, when I used to, I always avoided the most recent releases,
sticking to the older, better tested ones. I used to start with the
distribution configuration, then applied the minimal changes required,
and it used to work.
Hopefully someone else in this list may give you more appropriate advice.

Kind regards,

Giuliano
