What to look at when Programing ?

Hi 
I have just started rtlinux and having FIFO to signal back and forth
between kernel and user system.

I have not got any UNIX programing skill and having looked at
some functions and MACROs I noticed the UNIX system programing 
bascis are required if I want to do more.

Do you have any suggestions on what to look at ?
to have basics on kernel and user side programing skills.
