I started using Linux, RTAI and VMWARE (3.*)
under a windows host several years ago 
and everything worked fine
except real-time performance. 
Probably now, faster CPUs and newer version,
things could be better. 
Anyway we are using it now 
very succesfully as a cross-compiling environment.
