It works for some limited definition of the verb 'to work'.

It functions, runs, does stuff.. but is by no means realtime (as is to be 
expected).

That being said, I strongly recommend using it for development, especially 
if you are writing kernel-side code that crashes your box often.  It's 
much nicer to be able to use your computer while the vmware instance 
reboots than to be sitting twiddling your thumbs while waiting for your 
real machine to reboot.

Also reboots of the vm can be very fast because of its ability to save 
machine state and revert to it later.

Basically: YES, I find it to be a tremendously useful development 
platform!
