No, I mean a warm boot. Not a power cycle.  I've rebooted via SRM and had settings vanish.  I was going to see if it'd fire tonight, but I was baling hay.  I've been quite busy the last two days.  I haven't even had a chance to go finish up the work on my new John Deere model A. I'm dying to bring it home again.

  By let it simmer do you mean I should just have power hooked to it, or have it running?

 I doubt I have a PCI video card as new as a Radeon hanging around.  I do have some Fire GL 3000 Pros with the expansion decks, but I had really bad luck getting 'em working in X under Debian. Booted fine, however. I had Debian on my AXPPCI33 and my EB164.  Didn't like it. I'll look and see what else I have In my magic PCI bin.

If you mean "power cycle" and not just "reboot", then note that
this is often a symptom that the mobo 3.3v battery has gone dead,
as the console "setting" is recorded in memory that's backed by it.
Once replaced, ">>> set console graphics" should hold through
power cycles.

And a 4/233 could be any of a number of things, but it's certainly
old enough to have worn out the battery... ;-}

Once you can get it to SRM, ">>> show config" should tell us what
it really is...
