when you reedit the lilo.conf,you need run the lilo again, if not maybe 
the lilo wouldn't work when you reboot your box.
the kernel can get the image file means:1)the kernel must can find out 
where is the image file 2)kernel supports ram disk.
about the detials you should refer to how to build the kernel.
