problem installing ccm load-bundle --interactive --name -aplaws-p lus-standard

I'm trying to install the aplaws plus ccm system on linux 9 and have come
across a problem. (this may be basic as I've only used linux since last
Friday)
 
I've installed Linux 9, with all the servers etc, CCM runtime tools and
tomcat. All CCM runtime variables are correct, according to the LAWS
documentation dated 30/3/04, and Postgresql is installed and running with an
account ccm, in this instance the password (as it's a local machine test) is
also ccm.
 
I'm trying to install this as root: ccm load-bundle --interactive --name
-aplaws-plus-standard
 
I get ...
 
the database type is recognised
the ccm-core package is configured
the jdbc url parameter is set
 
then it hangs for about 3 mins before returning:
Warning : the database is not accepting connections.
 
I've tried telnet, ping, pg_ctl status, psql -l as directed and all are
fine, the database is running, there is a database called ccm and a user ccm
 
does anyone have knowledge enough to help on this? any help would be great
as at present I'm so new to this I'm just trying from the install
documentation and do not really understand all the possible scenario's
(microsoft junkie until now i'm afraid)
