There are configuration options of what a short tap on the power and
suspend button does (ignored, suspend, hibernate, shutdown, and "ask
you" which ain't gonna do much good if you can't see the screen to
answer a prompt).  I think this only refers to power and suspend
switches connected to the motherboard, but it may pay attention to special keys on some keyboards.  Either way, you probably want to ensure your system is set up as you need.

However, first up, is your machine really gone to sleep in some fashion
(drives have stopped, fans have stopped, actually halted operating), or
have you lost control of a running system?

I have one system that will occasionally get into some confused state
if I've suspended it.  A little mains glitch, perhaps, has upset it in
the meantime.  And it won't wake via the usual method (hitting any keys
on the keyboard).  It may require a tap or two on the power switch, and
it will usually resume.  And a little less often, it has sometimes
completely stuffed up, and will have to be a fresh boot.
