I don't think it makes sense to attempt to combine such different, and obsolete, versions of gcc/g++, but that's your call.  It should be possible, if all of the c++ is from a single version.  

I'm just talking about setting Makefile up in the usual way, with environment variables to set the C compiler, or some equivalent alternative.

I don't want to use other gcc suites than the ones provided with 
the standard install. gcc 2.96 is fine for me in most cases. But 
for one project, I need some new features of libstdc++3. Maybe is 
there a way to use gcc 2.96 and link against libstdc++3?

When you say the build environment must be correctly set, what files 
(or maybe environment variables only?) are you referring to?
