You should get away with compiling for 7.x and 8.x.

7.x is gcc-2.96 and 8.0 is gcc-3.0

Now I'm a SA and not a C developer so there might be other snafus that
i'm not aware of, glibc etc.

You could always make the source available and let the users do the
compiling :)
