I don't know how well it does with things like failed hard disks since I
haven't had one yet. but Nagios is a great monitoring program.  You will
have different side effects from different disks fails but nagios should
tell you something is up.

I beleive Raidtools has tools for notifying bad disks in a (software?)
array.
