modem trouble

i have a conexant modem formerly rockwell. I have red hat 8.0, 2.4.18.-14
kernel version of red hat. I downloaded the required software driver from
http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/
assuming i have a softmodem HSF, which i think i have and i went to download
section and went to I686 link for my P 4 and downloaded appropriate version.
I installed it with rpm -i command and using the Start Menu --->>
Extras --->> Kppp i setup a modem in ttyS0, i can query the modem but i
can't get anything back in the respective ATI 1, 2, 3, 4 and soon
commands... they come back empty. How do I solve this problem ? Please help
me friends.
