RE: about clustering

I just went through this the manual way, not AS2.1, and I'm pretty sure
you can have the router and real server in the same machine but you may
run into some configuration issues where a network or apache
configuration will not work for both setups. It's just cleaner to have
them separate.

You only need two nics in the router if you're using NAT routing where
it masquerades the addresses. If all the servers are on the same subnet
use Direct Routing. I have my director setup at
http://phpatwork.com/index.2ts?page=forum&sub=144&zone=94 for RH7.3. 

I'd try setting up a director and real server first to test that you can
get at least that working. Then look at what you do to the real server
and add the real server specific config to the director, add the server
in the lvs.cf file and try it out.
