The best way to approach that is to buy a external modem that connects 
through the serial port.  That way the manufacturer of the modem cannot 
'cheat' and underload the required chips to do the modem functions and 
then offload the work onto the CPU's like Winmodems.  I bought a Aopen 
FM56EXV and it has worked excellently with any OS I have used it on.
