Doesn't that "error 8" indicate a locked ppp file being present? 1st make sure you can access the modem-- "echo /dev/ttySN/ath1" (where N is the com port in Windows or serial port that your modem occupies. Then reset it with "echo /dev/ttySN/ATZ". If that is successful then goto the /var/lock/ directory and see if a pppX file exist. If so delete the file and try the dialer again. Good luck!
