You should be very scared.  I've had the automounter remount /home and
make my user directories invisible not to mention it forcing a raid
resync on reboot.  The kernel mounter gets very confused about where
that partition really lives.

If any disk activities occures, reboot, unmount, fsck and try again.
Except for your / partition which can be fsck'd only at boot or by
going to runlevel 1, remounting read-only, fsck'ing.  A reboot is
recommended at that point, but I don't know if it is strictly
required.
