Adaptec 7899W timeout problem

I have a Xeon with onboard SCSI controller (Adaptec 7899W) and single SCSI
disk.
The system tries to boot and recognises the disk, but on the SCSI
initialisation the following message repeats
scsi: aborting due to timeout : pid 0 scsi 0 channel 0 id 0 lin 0
" 1 "
etc.
Has anybody encountered this problem and is there a fix.
