This is anecdotal, but I've heard from a tape software vendor that they won't provide tech support for their product for SCSI tape drives on kernels before 2.4.17.

They claim that the SCSI code is somehow not stable prior to that kernel level. I didn't get into details with them about SCSI problems I saw, but I upgraded the kernels and no longer have SCSI problems.
