Learn to fish.... okay. :) It's easy to research all day and come up
empty. Been there, done that. From here on in, it's all in they syntax.

Google is your friend. You're biggest asset in linux is not how to do
anything, it's how to ask the right question, and where to look for the
answers.

If google is your friend. google/linux (http://www.google.com/linux) is
your best buddy. In the telnet case, "telnet howto" is a good query.

If that shows no results, then check the distro docs on the parent site. 
Chances are there are step-by-step instructions about doing exactly what
you want to do.

Also, do some googling for "linux newbies". You will be suprised at the
wealth of information available. Another good google to do is <your area>
lug (linux users group).
