With Windows (at least the 9x family) it USUALLY works to do this:
--before last shutdownon old MB, go to control panel/device manager
and remove ALL devices shown there.
--then do the hardware swap
--and on first reboot(s) let windows find all the hardware and 
install drivers. You may need the MB (and other peripheral) manufacturer's
driver disks for this.
Then MOST OF THE TIME this gives a workable system. Haven't tried it
with NT/WK/XP.

On Linux, it works IF you're not stepping downward to an incompatible
processor. Case in point: A few years ago I moved drives from a K6-2
to a PIII. A year or so later, due to ongoing weird problems that I
believed to be hardware, I moved BACK to the K6 system. unfortunately,
up2date had done kernel updates so it was then running a i686 kernel.
Guess what? a 686 kernel won't BOOT on a K6-2. Oops.
