Always check your logs first. If there's a problem with the X
configuration, it should show up in the logs. Sometimes you can log into
the box from another machine via ssh and killall X, which should bring it
back to a normal state.

What you are experiencing is the number 1 reason that X should not be
installed on servers, which this is of some sort (httpd and ftdp, etc.).
Ximian is a look-good kind of eye cnady desktop, but again, not for
servers.
