Not sure why it should fail: I backup almost 3Gb on a WAN connection weekly, and for me it has always worked without a glitch (both servers are RH7.2, though that should make no difference). If the requirement for encryption is not stringent, you could export /home from RH7.2 via NFS or Samba and mount it somewhere on RH9, for instance under /mnt/home72; then, on RH9, you can use a 'cp -pr /mnt/home72/* /home/' or something to the same effect. Both NFS and Samba are quite fast, and in any event a lot faster than scp.
