Let us know what kind of drive you have and interface. Is it supported in the kernel you are using? 
Also, the following should be compiled into the Linux kernel, depending on what devices the SCSI adapter will control:
SCSI support > SCSI tape support
SCSI support > SCSI CD-ROM support
SCSI support > SCSI generic support
I have SCSI Sony SDT5000 DSS-2  4mm tape drive and it was recognized by Red Hat Kudzu program at installation and configured what was needed.
