tape driver configuration (RH7.0)

I am using an internal HP35470A Rev T603 drive (DDS 1). About the interface
I suppose is Jurassic SCSI... 
Red Hat kernel recognizes it fine! I configured it at installation using
kudzu and the box has been happy after that.
Basically, I am trying to backup all the files from that box (or make a boot
image tape), but when I type:

#mt -rewind 

It complains about the device file... so I know I have to defined a sort of
default tape, or run some command to make it available.
