I appreciate your help.
Unfortunately I tried both expert mode with either aha154x or aha154x with
parameters aha1542=0x330 as well as typing at the boot: prompt linux
aha1542=0x330 buslogic=0x340 which it accepted but then took me to the
standard install screens which then prompt me for the driver disk and it
fails again with the same message:

 error 2 reading header:  cpio:  bad magic

The board is an adaptec aha1542cp, defaulted io330, irq11, dma5, id 7

Any other idea's?  I've searched the web until my fingers have bled.  Again
the unit will autoboot linux off the CD as well as Win95 off the HDD so the
hardware works.  Linux 7.0 just doesn't like it.

  The base address of 0x330 may cause a problem with some sound cards,
as mpu often uses that as a default. But, it should not keep you from
being able to install. My SCSI came set with 0x130 as the default. Irq
11 is pretty standard; I run my 1542 there.
   I bought this machine at a used computer Meet and just wanted to
see if RH 7 would install. I remember having problems getting past the
loading Adaptec 154x driver from the driver.img floppy section. I
tried various combinations of:

          aha1542=0x130
          aha154x=0x130
          aha1542=0x130,11
          aha1542=0x130 irq=11
          etc.
  I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly, you may have to
specifically select the "don't probe" for card option. In any case,
after much persistence, it continued with the install process.

3.8 Why doesn't my Adaptec 154x work?

It appears that some 1540's and 1542's are a bit hosed by the Buslogic
probe. You will usually get an error referring to ``DMA'' in the
Adaptec probe when this happens. To fix it, you need to enter command
line parameters as follows:

       boot:  linux aha154x=0x340 buslogic=0x334

This is assuming, of course, that the base address of your Adaptec is
0x340. If not, put your address in there instead. This will force the
buslogic to only probe an address where your Adaptec is not.
