The pppd is only started by mgetty if you specify AutoPPP. I have not done
this yet as I wanted to get mgetty working in basic mode first. What I do is
dial the server and when the connection is established the windows box gives
me a terminal window where I can specify the user name and password. I then
get a command prompt, this is NOT using ppp. The PPP and Serial howtos
explain this quite well. The ppp howto then states that you should do a
setuid on pppd and create a global alias for ppp to call pppd with options.
As I said, this is the least of my problems especially as I will set up
AutoPPP if I can get ppp working.

As for the default gateway setting on my client, which is the important one
for me, I cannot find anywhere to specify this on the dial-up connections
properties. I thought the ppp server would supply this information, just
like it does with dns servers. I cannot find anything on the man page to set
in the options though.

Thanks

Simon

At this point I start to be confused. Why are you running pppd on the
server. That is what
mgetty does. If you have shell access pppd must be running. I just don't
understand what
you are asking. Could you clarify?

The gateway is setup in the client setup on the w2k machine and should be
the ip address
of your server. I do this all the time from my w2k setup at home. Again I am
not sure I
understand what you are doing. How did you configure the ppp connection on
the w2k client?
