As a follow up to this question what exactly should I put in the options.ttyS0 file ? My Linux machine has 2 interface cards in it as it acts as the default gateway for all my locally connected machines. eth0 is the internal nic with an ip of 172.16.45.1 eth1 is the external nic with an ip of 192.168.254.2 eth0 is connected to the internal hub and eth1 is connected to the DSL hub/router. The linux box runs DHCP for any locally connected clients with an ip ragne of 172.16.45.50 to 172.16.45.100. There is one other machine with a fixed ip address of 172.16.45.2. Other than that any other ip addresses within the local subnet are free. I have no idea if the 172.16... subnet is valid for an internal network and I am quite happy for people to point it out if it is wrong, but I will not be changing that in the short term, not until I have got this problem sorted anyway. I have not done this yet as I wanted to get mgetty working in basic mode first. What I do is dial the server and when the connection is established the windows box gives me a terminal window where I can specify the user name and password. I then get a command prompt, this is NOT using ppp. The PPP and Serial howtos explain this quite well. The ppp howto then states that you should do a setuid on pppd and create a global alias for ppp to call pppd with options. As I said, this is the least of my problems especially as I will set up AutoPPP if I can get ppp working. As for the default gateway setting on my client, which is the important one for me, I cannot find anywhere to specify this on the dial-up connections properties. I thought the ppp server would supply this information, just like it does with dns servers. I cannot find anything on the man page to set in the options though. At this point I start to be confused. Why are you running pppd on the server. That is what mgetty does. If you have shell access pppd must be running. I just don't understand what you are asking. Could you clarify? > > 2. When I do get a pppd session running the client has trhe wrong default > gateway setting, the gateway comes back with the same ip address as that > assigned to the client machine. The gateway is setup in the client setup on the w2k machine and should be the ip address of your server. I do this all the time from my w2k setup at home. Again I am not sure I understand what you are doing. How did you configure the ppp connection on the w2k client? > > At the moment the second problem is causing the most trouble as I can get > around the first by doing an su as I am the only person using this and I > have root access anyway. > > You help would be much appreciated, > > Simon Wiehe > > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > If you have received this e-mail in error or wish to read our e-mail > disclaimer statement and monitoring policy, please refer to > http://www.drkw.com/disc/email/ or contact the sender. > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > > > _______________________________________________ > Guinness-list mailing list > [email protected] > https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/guinness-list -- ------------------------------------------- Aaron Konstam Computer Science Trinity University 715 Stadium Dr. San Antonio, TX 78212-7200 telephone: (210)-999-7484 email:[email protected] _______________________________________________ Guinness-list mailing list [email protected] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/guinness-list ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have received this e-mail in error or wish to read our e-mail disclaimer statement and monitoring policy, please refer to http://www.drkw.com/disc/email/ or contact the sender. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Guinness-list mailing list [email protected] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/guinness-list ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have received this e-mail in error or wish to read our e-mail disclaimer statement and monitoring policy, please refer to http://www.drkw.com/disc/email/ or contact the sender. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
