should work.
you update linux and not iptables.

btw, I would recommend, that you update to the latest kernel version
(www.kernel.org) and to the latest iptables version (www.iptables.org) as
well.
for updating the kernel be sure to have the kernel-headers package
installed.
for updating iptables let me know, if you need hints.
