A while ago, when I bought an Asus board I chose the non-RAID version. I later 
discovered I should have chosen the RAID version because one _can_ use the 
extra IDE interfaces without using the RAID feature. 

Check _your_ documentation.

If you want to play with the promise RAID, fine, do it. However, if you want 
to _use_ raid, go with the Linux implementation.

It's been around longer.
