I believe it is definitely unmounted.  While mounted, mount lists it as:

/dev/sda1 on /mnt/smedia type vfat (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=gerry)

and a mass storage icon is on the desktop.  an ls lists the files.

Upon umount, the icon disappears, it is not in the mount output, and an
ls shows no files.

I can mount it again as long as I have not changed the media.  If I pull
the card out and reinsert the same card, I get the error message
mentioned before that occurred when I changed to a different card.
