Do the two threads actually run simultaneously? Or is it more akin to 
multitasking as Linux does it, but done in the CPU?

If the former, I'd expect a performance very nearly equal to a "real" 
dual-processor system whereas with the latter, the patchy improvements I've 
heard reported seem more likely.
