 The person at Redhat is technically correct. Basic support only entitles
you to setup/install support, and RHN updates, so there is no obligation
on Redhat to fix the problem.
 I can think of two ways the person involved can proceed. If he/she has
enough technical knowledge to describe and investigate the problem, it
would be a very good idea to report it on bugzilla, where the technical
person who looks at the problem is likely to spot the wider implications. 
Also, if I remember correctly Oracle offers some kind of linux support as
part of their contract, so talking to Oracle might be worth a try.
