The version that shipped with Red Hat 6.0 wasn't really even usable, at least not without the updates. I seems to remember that 1.0.39 in Red Hat 6.1 fixed a lot of stuff. I haven't had many problems since "October Gnome" in the 1.0 series, which IIRC was available as a set of updates to Red Hat 6.1. This is all ancient history. I see a lot of stuff here and there about how unstable Gnome is. It makes me think that some people haven't tried it for a couple years..
