Slow NFS-write Performance w/Solaris 9 Clients

After having let our RHEL AS version 3 support lapse quite a few months back,
we renewed it and have up2dated our servers to all current packages.

Since the upgrade, we have see abysmal NFS-write performance with Solaris 9
clients and RHEL servers. dumps of Solaris filesystems to files on the NFS
server that used to take minutes now take hours, while the Solaris machine
continually whines about the NFS filesystem going away, then returning, or
just plain "NFS write error" messages.

(We did not see such poor performance prior to updating the RHEL server.)

Filesystem is mounted (Solaris /etc/vfstab entry):

dell:/data1 - /data1 nfs - yes bg,soft,vers=3

"dell" is the RHEL server.

dell's /etc/exports says:

/data1 solaris_client_hostname (rw)

Are there other parameters recommended for this sort of combination?
