Unfortunately I didn't think about the Oracle stuff when I was encountering this problem. Hard to test now that the server has been rebooted... There was a thread on nahant-list in April about the Oracle libraries looping in times(NULL) calls in exactly the same way. It's possible they are at fault here; certainly they would have to be eliminated from enquires to track this down further.
