Font problem after up2date

We are running RHE3 on several Sun V20Z servers (with dual AMD opteron
processors). Today, one of our administrators ran up2date on one of the
servers.

The last thing he remembers seeing is a font 2.2.1-13 update for X86-64
which he selected.

After rebooting, the login window displays no text, e.g., the username
prompt, etc. The cursor merely is blinking in the login field, but
nothing is displayed when the username is typed in. We can toggle to a
text login screen ok. Killing Xwindows process does not solve the
problem

We then tried up2date on a 2nd system, but elected not to install the
font update. It came up ok with the login text displayed.

1. Any ideas on what caused the problem?

2. What directory/files on the system that works should be copied to
the system that no longer displays text in order to get it back in
working order?

3. Also, we noticed that up2date returns patches for i386 in addition
to X86-64 updates. Why does it return i386 and should we install them?

Thanks,

Willis Gregory
