RE: Installing update 4 for RHEL ES 3

I am thinking I will need to download the ISO's and rebuild from what
you say. Reason for only going as far as update 4 is the software we use
has only been tested and certified to work on RHEL 3 update 4. And if we
install update 8 the company that provides the software will not support
it.

Unfortuantely, it's not possible to do an upgrade via booting off of the
CD from one update of RHEL3 to another.

 

I would be careful with the method I mentioned previously though - it
may give you RPM conflicts that might take awhile to resolve (needing
new ones, updated ones obseleting old ones, etc)  Shouldn't be too
painful though, but up2date would take care all of that for you.

 

I guess the question is why update 8 won't work - RedHat makes great
pains to maintain compatibility between updates.  The only thing that I
know for a fact is substantially different between those two updates in
the web browser has been re-based to seamonkey due to security issues.
That being said, most people aren't using web browsers on servers, so
that's why RedHat felt comfortable introducing breakage in the name of
security (I speak as an outside observer, and not a represenative of
redhat obviously).  Most applications from ISV's are certified on, for
instance, 2.4.21-15 and errata kernels.  That qualifies update 3 (or
whatever that one came with :-) ), and beyond.  It really depends on
what the application does, I guess.

	I only have the one Linux server, the rest are Windows so the
Satellite option isn't a viable option. I am not overly familiar with
the rpm command but I will research it a bit.

	 

	Is it possible to get the ISO's, burn to CD/DVD and boot of the
CD's and do an upgrade only? If not I will try your first option and see
how I get on.

	To be a little more specific, you can download the ISO's, and
then copy the RedHat/RPMS directory somewhere, and run an rpm -Fvh
against all of those RPM's.  It will only update those RPM's that are
currently installed.

	 

	Also - this is a perfect use for an RHN Satellite.  That way,
you can still use up2date, and promote only those errata that have been
thouroughly tested in your environment into your channel, having a
separate channel for development, staging, and production.  Satellite is
quite expensive, however.  It really depends on how many servers you
have to manage.
