set_rtc_mmss: can't update from ...

Hi,

I see many of these error messages in kernel log, believe it is ntpd 
which tries to sync kernel clock to hardware clock - and fails.

For example I get:

# hwclock -r
select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out

After a reboot this works for a day then again the problems.

Sys:
El3 U8, kernel 2.4.21-47.0.1.EL, old P3 733MHz, ASUS CUV4X with VIA 
chipset, 1GB Ram

Probably hardware problem or a software problem after all?
