Clearing history

Hi All,
Can someone tell me how to clear my history file its getting rather
large. I've tried history -c no joy...I'me using redhat 5.2.Just want to
clear it, if  I do the following edit my .bashrc and add

HISTFILESIZE=0
HISTSIZE=0
i will not be able to use the up-arrow to retrieve you're my last
command.
