Is lirc broken on RHEL5?

Hi,

I am pretty sure that lirc used to work on rhel5.
I had lirc 0.8.4a from ATrpms installed.

However, since yesterday, as soon as I press any remote control key
my system completely locks up, and the reset button is the only solution.

I also tried lirc-0.8.6-85_cvs20090909.el5.x86_64.rpm from ATrpms testing
with the same result.

Then I recompiled the .src.rpm from Fedora 12, and the system does not lock
up any more,
but although lirc is running, it does not recognize the codes from my
remote:

I also do not use any kmdl, because I just need the /dev/input, supported by
the stock kernel.

The hardware is perfect, because everything works when I reboot on F12,
installed on the same computer.

Any thoughts?
