I have just uploaded a new version patched for vl42 on RHEL5.
I tested your projectM build and it is also working with vlc 1.1.0 on RHEL5.

However, I had to upgrade alsa-lib to 1.0.23, because vlc was having trouble
to reset my sound card. I just used the .src.rpm from F12.
