thanks for answering to this thread, I was under the impression that
disttags had been added to tabu words to everybody's killfiles ;)

Yes, I know, it was done to remain compatible with the fedora.us
chosen rhl scheme.

Unfortunately any disttag not starting with letters will create issues
with segmented build numbers (like often used by RH to signify small
changes or "branches/forks" of previous packages).

Also the "repotag-in-the-middle-of-the-buildnumber" idiom in fedora.us
requires a redesign anyway in order to be compatible even to its
sibling "non-legal" repo. So while having a disttag scheme is a good
thing for fedora.us, the chosen implementation needs reworking and is
not adequate for a more general standard.

As the buildtag, even with attached cvs/pre subversioning stuff,
almost always end with numbers, and can have changing number of
segments in the buildtag between releases, the following disttag needs
to be separated and kept out of the comparison of the buildtags as
much as possible. Perfect isolation and sequentialisation of the
comparison of buildtag and disttag is not possible, but keeping the
disttag starting with letters covers 99.9% of real-life packaging.
