Hi,

before FC1 launched the typical disttag initials to use for Red Hat
Linux was simply rh, e.g.

       ..., rh7.3, rh8.0, rh9 (or sometimes w/o the dot)

When FC1 was released there was a debate on what to do with the new
disttags, because "fc" < "rh" in rpm's eyes. Several solutions turned
out:

a) no disttags at all (mostly at Fedora Core)
b) -, "fc1", "fc2", ... don't care about RHL (mostly at Fedora Extras)
c) "rh9", "rhfc1", ... (at first all 3rd party repos, now about the
   half)
d) "<N>.rh9", "<N+1>.fc1" (Dag/Dries/fresh/rpmforge)
e) "fc0.9", "fc1", ... (nowhere, only suggested)
f) "RHL9", "fc1", ... (nowhere, only suggested)

ATrpms changes from c) to f). That's because

o Fedora Core releases are now much wider in use than RHL releases,
  therefore they get the nicer disttag. Furthermore some people are
  (politically) annoyed to read "rh" in Fedora packages, that should
  bring them peace :)
o RHL support will cease by the end of year, and the issue with the
  new shouting "RHL" disttags will vanish as fast as it was
  introduced. In fact the real message of this mail is that "rhfc"
  will become "fc" and don't use RHL anymore :)

The change is gradual, so you will probably still find lots of
packages with the old disttag convention. But new packages (including
updates) will only be created with the new convention.
