you right it doesn't make sense...can you try it without sudo in the
commandline?  Maybe sudo's logic caused the extra lag in the provide
test.
Who knows...I'll run several time tests and compile the stats for it
tonite and then again after I get 8.0 installed.  

A grab aware repository with a provides db already to go isn't a bad
idea (especially for initial server contact where you want to pull a lot
of provides in one go)...but it's not clear that the move to 4.1 is
going to force you to do this. Even if it took 1/2 second per
provide...doing 1400 or so packages takes a while on initial server
contact...pulling one already build provides db from the server would
make that initial server contact much less painful....and probably makes
using a dial-up connection with grab palatable.
