this is why, when I actually want to get work done, I still use the fvwm
config file I've been using for 3 years or more. 
no frills, no waiting, no breaking. :)
right-click on the desktop (OS/2 style) gives me a list of applications to
launch; and xterm is at the top of the list. this way I only have to move
the mouse a few inches to launch a new window, instead of going to an icon
which may be several monitors away. (I use 2-3 monitors on all my
workstations).

www.redchrome.org has a few screenshots. the early ones from my home
workstation are still roughly what my work workstation is like; even the
Enlightenment themes I use at home now still have roughly the same
ergonomics, even if they're a bit fancier (and much more fragile).
